Since the PlayStation 5 has been on the market for more than three years, there has been conjecture regarding whether Sony will do the same for this generation of consoles as it did for the PS4: release a mid-cycle refresh in the form of a PS5 Pro, similar to the PS4 Pro that came out in 2016.

According to information received from experts, CNBC is now claiming that the PS5 console will actually come this year with a “refreshed” version.

Notably, as interest in the PS5 rapidly dwindles, Sony lowered their sales projections, which coincides with this situation. Naturally, many would be interested in a brand-new console revamp that is anticipated to be more powerful and prepared to run the forthcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 at high fidelity.

As GTA 6 is scheduled to release in 2025, it makes sense for Sony to have the greatest system available for the general public before releasing what is anticipated to be a huge hit.

Furthermore, if previous console generations are any indication, Sony and Microsoft introduced mid-cycle updates with the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, respectively. Consequently, with the cost of the construction declining, this can be the moment when Sony performs the same action.

Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, told CNBC that “there seems to be a broad consensus in the game industry that Sony is indeed preparing a launch of a PS5 Pro in the second half of 2024.”

He went on, “And Sony will want to make sure that when GTA VI launches in 2025, a launch that will be a shot in the arm for the entire gaming industry, they have a great piece of hardware ready.”

It will be intriguing to see how Sony positions the supposed PS5 Pro in terms of pricing, how it develops, and—most importantly—how Microsoft reacts to it.
