<p>On October 15, the Jos Buttler-led England team was defeated by Hashmatullah Shahidi’s Afghanistan by a humiliating margin of 69 runs in match 13 of the current IC ODI World Cup 2023 in Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. <p>Jaffer tweeted, “Hope you’re okay @MichaelVaughan.” Even worse, he published a video that took aim at England’s batting order for losing the chase against Afghanistan. Both of Jaffer’s tweets are now trending on social media.</p>
<p>The 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup was in desperate need of an unexpected victory after a string of one-sided games, and Afghanistan provided it with a 69-run triumph against the reigning champions England on Sunday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in this city.</p>
<p>Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ikram Alikhil blasted half-centuries to help Afghanistan reach 284 in 49.5 overs with the crowd of 26, 440 cheering them on. Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman had a strong bowling effort to restrict England to 215 in 40.5 overs by taking three wickets apiece.</p>
<p>With this victory, Afghanistan breaks a 14-match World Cup losing record with the largest ODI victory in their history, shocking both the competition and the cricketing community. Australia is currently at the bottom of the standings among the 10 teams, while Afghanistan is now in sixth position, just below England.</p>
<p>When Jonny Bairstow was caught lbw by Fazalhaq Farooqui on the opening ball of the chase, England suffered an early setback. He quickly reviewed the decision. Replay evidence indicated the ball to have struck the leg-stump on the umpire’s call, therefore England kept review but lost Bairstow.</p>
<p>Even though Dawid Malan and Joe Root scored several boundaries, Farooqui persisted in bowling with a probing line and length, hitting Malan on the pads (and igniting a review) before beating him. By castleing Root with a googly that remained low, Mujeeb Ur Rahman of Afghanistan put further pressure on England.</p>
<p>Using strike-rotation and a couple boundaries, Malan and Harry Brook attempted to stabilize the pursuit. Mohammad Nabi, though, eliminated the former by tricking him with an outside off-stump ball that he chipped straight to short extra cover.</p>
<p>To send Jos Buttler over the gate, Naveen-ul-Haq bowled a beautiful delivery, with a fuller ball coming in from wide outside the off-stump. After catching Liam Livingstone plumb lbw with a straighter ball, Rashid Khan was added to the list of wicket-takers. Livingstone attempted to turn things around, but in vain.</p>
<p>England held out hope as Brook stood at the crease, hitting boundaries whenever wide or overpitched deliveries were offered to complete his fifty in 35 balls. However, when Nabi used a dip, turn, and bounce to drag Sam Curran forward and get him to edge slip as the boundaries dried up, Nabi scored.</p>
<p>The spinner eventually got his man when he got the googly to fly past the inside edge and slam into the off-stump after Chris Woakes survived a lbw protest against Mujeeb. By having Brook nick behind a speedier carrom ball to Ikram Alikhil, Mujeeb delivered the decisive hit. Despite Reece Topley prolonging the inevitable, Rashid had Adil Rashid caught at slip when the leg-spinner castled Mark Wood, sending the fans into a joyous frenzy.</p>
